Stay Safe on the Roads This Memorial Day Weekend

This Message is Brought to You by Texas Mutual Insurance and TAMACC

The National Safety Council (NSC) has issued a concerning estimation that approximately 450 lives may be lost in preventable crashes on U.S. roads during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that U.S. roads are the most dangerous they have been in 16 years, with a 10.5% increase in roadway fatalities in 2021 compared to the previous year. As Memorial Day is known to be one of the most perilous driving weekends, it is crucial for everyone who chooses to drive to plan ahead and prioritize safe driving behaviors. Remember, Memorial Day weekend starts at 6:00 PM on Friday, May 27, and ends at 11:59 PM on Monday, May 30.

To ensure your safety and the well-being of others on the road, here are some essential safe driving tips to consider this Memorial Day weekend:

  1. Buckle up: Failure to use seat belts remains one of the leading causes of fatalities in crashes. Always buckle up and ensure that any passengers, including children, are securely fastened in appropriate car seats.
  2. Designate a sober driver or arrange alternate transportation: While festivities are a part of the holiday, impaired driving is a serious concern. Remember that alcohol is not the only substance that can impair your ability to drive safely. Drugs, including opioids, marijuana, and certain over-the-counter medications, can cause drowsiness, affect visual functions, and impair judgment and motor skills. Designate a sober driver or utilize alternative transportation methods.
  3. Slow down: Speeding contributes to more than a quarter of all traffic fatalities. Drive below the speed limit, and be particularly attentive to pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring their safety on the roads.
  4. Prepare before you go: Before embarking on your journey, take the necessary precautions to ensure your vehicle is in optimal condition. Check the oil, inflate the tires properly, and verify if there are any open recalls that need to be addressed. You can visit ChecktoProtect.org to determine if your vehicle has any open recalls and arrange for free repairs.
  5. Drive distraction-free: The use of cell phones while driving has resulted in numerous tragic accidents. Keep your focus on the road and put your phones away. Remember to #JustDrive.
  6. Look before you lock: Tragically, pediatric vehicular heatstroke remains the leading cause of non-crash motor vehicle-related fatalities for children. Since 1998, over 900 children in the U.S. have lost their lives due to this entirely preventable tragedy. Always double-check your back seat for the presence of children or animals when you reach your destination.

With an anticipated 7% increase in travel compared to last year, it is important to brace yourself for busy airports and roads if you are planning to take a trip for Memorial Day weekend. By following these safe driving tips, you can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable holiday for yourself and others. Let us work together to reduce the number of preventable crashes and ensure a memorable Memorial Day weekend for all the right reasons.
