Flor de Nochebuena: The Ancient Roots of a Christmas Icon

From Aztec Gardens to Christmas Cheer: The Poinsettia Story Bright red, bold, and unmistakably festive, the poinsettia is a Christmas staple—but its history goes back centuries. Native to southern Mexico, the Aztecs called it Cuetlaxóchitl (“flower that withers”) and used it for dyes, medicine, and religious ceremonies. Its vibrant red bracts symbolized life, purity, and the sun.

TAMACC Opposes HUB Certification Suspension

The Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) is strongly opposing Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock’s decision to suspend new certifications under the Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) program.

TAMACC says it is working with business owners, lawmakers, and its members to push for the full reinstatement of the program. The Comptroller’s office halted new HUB certifications on October 28, 2025, citing Executive Order GA-55, which prohibits awarding state contracts based on race, ethnicity, or sex.

Important Update: TAMACC Annual Convention Canceled

We want to remind our members and partners that the TAMACC Annual Convention, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been canceled.

This decision was not made lightly. We had an exciting lineup of speakers, workshops, and activities prepared to celebrate and empower our community. However, given the current circumstances — including the ongoing government shutdown, legal challenges affecting Texas’s Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) program, and the broader difficulties many businesses and chambers are facing — moving forward with the convention would not have been prudent.

After thoughtful deliberation, the TAMACC Executive Committee made the empathetic and responsible choice to cancel this year’s convention and reschedule it for next year.

We recognize that this is a challenging time for many. Rather than hosting an event that might add stress or fall short of serving our members meaningfully, we are choosing to pause. Our focus remains on standing in solidarity with those affected and staying mindful of the moment.

Thank you for your continued support, resilience, and leadership. We look forward to gathering again next year with renewed purpose and strength.

Honoring a True American Hero: Roy P. Benavidez

Master Sergeant Roy P. Benavidez exemplified extraordinary courage and selflessness during one of the most harrowing rescue missions of the Vietnam War. On May 2, 1968, despite being gravely wounded, he voluntarily leapt from a helicopter into enemy territory to save a reconnaissance team under siege.

Under relentless fire, Benavidez carried wounded and fallen soldiers to safety, sustained a broken jaw, and endured 37 bullet and bayonet wounds. His heroic actions saved the lives of at least eight comrades and earned him the Medal of Honor.

His story is one of grit, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to his fellow soldiers. We encourage you to learn more about this remarkable Texan and watch his powerful speeches, many of which are available on YouTube.

Let us remember and honor his legacy—not just as a war hero, but as a symbol of resilience and service.
