June 30, 2022 Heat-Related Deaths Up 56% Between 2018 and 2021 Extreme heat feels like the new normal for many in the U.S., and it’s only getting hotter. Last July was the hottest month ever recorded, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In the U.S., where July is regularly the hottest month of the year, many states saw record high temperatures. According to an EPA report, some statistical approaches estimate that more than 1,300 deaths per year in the United States are due to extreme heat, compared with about 600 deaths per year in the “underlying and contributing causes.” All heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable. Below is an infographic with the symptoms of heatstroke and the first aid needed to treat this life treating condition. June 24, 2022 Honoring Twelve Exceptional Texas Latinas On Friday, June 17, TAMACC held its Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon in Austin, Texas. Twelve outstanding Latinas were recognized for their resilience, accomplishments, community service, and their tenacity to overcome whatever obstacles were put in their way. It was an inspiring afternoon meeting and listening to these award recipients.  Due to Covid-19, the last Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon was in March of 2019. Uncertain of participation and attendance after three years we planned this year’s awards luncheon cautiously and conservatively. We are happy to report that the awards luncheon was sold out. Attendance was up over fifty percent from previous years. Thank you to those who attended and to our event sponsors who made this year’s luncheon possible. The Cen-Tex Hispanic Chamber launches Escalando, the first small business assistance program in the Waco area taught in Spanish WACO – The Cen-Tex Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (CTHCC) has launched a new initiative called Escalando (Spanish for climbing). This program, for the first time, will provide local Spanish-speaking business owners with additional support and resources.  “The city of Waco, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, is over 31% Hispanic and 24% of the population speaks a language other than English at home,” said CTHCC Chairman of the Board Jonathan Olvera. “Escalando is a program that Spanish-speaking business owners and entrepreneurs can use as a resource, to help start a new business or get the assistance and training to scale up their current business.” READ MORE HEMP A growing Industry for South Texas Latino Business Report Episode 34 - Hemp has been growing as a renewable source of raw materials for over 8,000 years. It is grown industrially in over 30 countries around the world, from Indonesia to the Netherlands to Argentina. June 16, 2022 TAMACC 2022 AWARDS LUNCHEON IS SOLD OUT Celebrating the Accomplishments of Texas Latinas On Friday, June 17, 2022, TAMACC will host the 8th Annual Women of Distinction Awards luncheon in Austin, where we will be celebrating the accomplishments of 12 amazing Latinas. Thank you to everyone who has supported this event and a Texas Size Thank You to our sponsors who make this event possible each year. A recap of the event will be posted in our next newsletter. June is the 10th Anniversary of DACA The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) celebrated its 10th anniversary on June 15, 2022. The policy established on June 15, 2012, provided more than 800,000 individuals with work authorization, temporary protections from deportation and other opportunities to further their careers and pursue educational goals at higher education institutions. Texas is home to 213,000 Dreamers, including 110,000 DACA recipients, the second highest Dreamer population after California. Nationally, there are over 1.97 million Dreamers. A Dream Act would let our state retain this talent and keep Texas competitive.   DACA recipients contribute nearly $42 billion to annual GDP.
