The Lone Star State leads the nation in labor-related accidents and especially workplace deaths and injuries among Hispanics. In 2020, there were 221 reported Latino fatalities in the workplace. But it is not a huge surprise that Texas has led the nation in workplace deaths of Latinos for 13 of the last 20 years.
According to a recent story in The American Prospect, “A Dangerous Place to be Latino,” 5,179 workers died on the job in Texas from 2010 to 2019 – more than in any other state. Two-thirds of the deaths in construction jobs in Texas were of Hispanic workers. | | TAMACC and TxDOT Discuss Joint Efforts to Mitigate Roadway Fatalities in Texas | | On May 25, Texas Transportation Commissioner Laura Ryan met with TAMACC President and CEO Pauline Anton and Executive Vice Chairman J.R. Gonzales to discuss ways in which TxDOT and TAMACC could work together to spread the word about safe driving to save lives.
In 2021 there were over 4,480 deaths on Texas roadways. It was the second deadliest year since the state started recording these statistics in 1940.
