TAMACC Joins IDRA Amicus Brief on Behalf of Students, Business, and Higher Education Organizations in a Reckless Case Challenging Texas Tuition Laws

The Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) filed an amicus brief in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals this week on behalf of 12 student, business, and higher education organizations in a case that began as a reckless anti-immigrant attack but that has far-reaching consequences for all Texans. The coalition urges the reversal of an injunction issued in Young Conservatives of Texas Foundation v. Neal Smatresk, et al. barring the University of North Texas (UNT) from collecting any out-of-state tuition from out-of-state U.S. citizens, as long as the Texas Dream Act remains in effect.

Our battle with COVID-19 is not over. There are several variants now, with subvariant Omicron strains. Cases are surging again in parts of the country, including parts of Texas.

The numbers are not as high as two years ago, of course. Or as scary as other surges. The vaccines that have been made widely available still provide substantial protection against emergency room or urgent care visits and hospitalizations caused by coronavirus infections.

Vaccine Hesitancy Among Texas Hispanics:

A Study by Texas State University

Latino Business Report Episode 36 – In this episode, we discuss the ongoing battle with COVID-19 and vaccine hesitancy among Texas Hispanics. To get a better understanding of why Hispanics are hesitant to get the vaccine, TAMACC partnered with Texas State University to conduct a study.

While the COVID-19 vaccination gap between Texas Hispanics and non-Hispanics has decreased, vaccination hesitancy is still an issue within this vulnerable population in Texas. Almost half of the unvaccinated survey respondents indicated strong intentions against vaccinating, stemming from distrust and fear.

Texas State Seeking Hispanic Business

Owners for Research Interviews

Texas State University and TAMACC are working together to conduct interviews with select Hispanic business owners for a new program called SCALEUP.

SCALEUP is focused on researching the unique challenges affecting minority-business growth and developing practical tools to help overcome these challenges.

To get a better sense of what the needs of Hispanic-owned businesses are, the McCoy College of Business is seeking business owners to interview.

The criteria for interview are:

Hispanic-owned
Located in Texas
500 or fewer employees
Must have been in business for more than two years

Monica Muñoz Andry

Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber President & CEO

The Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GAHCC) welcomes Monica Muñoz Andry as the chamber’s new President & CEO. Formerly the financial health program manager at University Federal Credit Union, Muñoz Andry starts her new position at the chamber on August 1, 2022.

“We’re thrilled to bring Monica, and her unique skillset, to the team at GAHCC,” said Emmy Alcocer-Hill, Board chair. “Among the many attributes that impressed the search committee was her history of leading large and small teams, small business financial health and nonprofit experience, and a customer-focused program design approach.”

Muñoz Andry is an accomplished and goal-driven professional. In her two-decade-plus career at UFCU, she rose through the not-for-profit’s operations, including serving as call center supervisor, business development manager, and financial health program manager, among other roles.

Recovery Grant Program for Texas Travel Industry Stakeholders, Small Businesses, and Economic Development Partners

Last month, the Office of the Governor announced the launch of the Texas Travel Industry Recovery Grant Program (TTIR), which began accepting applications on July 6, 2022.

Due to the overwhelming response from businesses and non-profits in the travel and tourism industry, they have extended the Category 1 application window to August 7 and have pushed back the dates of the upcoming application dates for Categories 2, 3, and 4.

The Boy from Mexico: A Children’s Book

Written and Illustrated by Edward Dennis

Latino Business Report Episode 35 - In this episode, we will be talking with Edward Dennis a Mexican American illustrator and educator who wrote a bilingual book that he hopes will inspire a dialogue between parents and their children on immigration issues.

The U.S.-Mexico border has millions of crossings each year. The Boy from Mexico is just one of those millions of stories told through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy named Luz. This book is a great way to introduce the concept of immigration to children. Dennis believes the story will empower children to develop their own opinion on the topic. It is a story of hope, determination, and finding one’s place in the world, it’s a story that needs to be told.

Beat the Heat

Record-setting high temperatures are occurring around the U.S. this summer, and potentially the next few future summers. Workplaces are beginning to struggle with keeping their employees cool.

Heat in the United States is deadly, with heat fatalities being the estimated direct cause of death of more than 1,300 Americans a year, and extreme heat also contributes to an unknown amount of cardiovascular, respiratory, and stress-related deaths according to a study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Meet TAMACC Graduate Fellow Cortland Treon

Cortland Treon was born in Abilene, Texas, and grew up in Okinawa, Japan. Growing up in an Air Force family, Cortland understands the sacrifices service families must make and the struggles that come with that lifestyle. Cortland graduated last May with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Texas State University. He is working towards his master’s in Business Administration and is expected to graduate this fall.

Cortland has a passion for marketing and believes in the power of community outreach. He previously volunteered for the San Marcos River Foundation where he helped the foundation target and reach more Texas State students for their volunteer river cleanup efforts. Cortland is also a big supporter of small businesses and recognizes their importance in building communities.

Cortland is eager to apply his learning experiences from his business schooling to help TAMACC fulfill its mission and duties of supporting Texas Hispanic businesses.
