SATURDAY, JUNE 29, 2024
June 20th marked the official beginning of summer. Despite the temperature only recently hitting 100 degrees in Austin, the heat index has been soaring into triple digits for weeks, making it exceptionally harsh.  We are thankful to Texas Mutual Insurance for their ongoing support of the community and for offering valuable reminders.
Texas Mutual Insurance Urges Vigilance Against Rising Heat Stroke Incidents Amid Record-Breaking Texas Heat

Austin, TX - With Texas facing unprecedented heat, Texas Mutual Insurance urges workers, employers, and anyone outdoors to be vigilant about the signs of heat stroke and to know how to respond quickly before medical help arrives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 1,200 Americans die annually from heat-related issues, such as heat stroke. This figure has increased significantly from approximately 700 deaths just a few years ago.

In 2023, the heat claimed more lives in Texas than any other year on record, based on preliminary data. These records date back to 1989. Remarkably, more than twice as many Texans died from heat in 2023 compared to 2011, the state’s hottest summer. Despite only a 19% increase in the state’s population over the past 12 years, heat-related deaths have surged, outpacing population growth.

Preventing Heat Stroke
Heat stroke is a serious, life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. Here are some expert-recommended tips to avoid heat stroke:

Stay Hydrated
  • Drink plenty of fluids: Water is best. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as they can lead to dehydration.
  • Electrolyte solutions: Use sports drinks or oral rehydration solutions to replace lost salts and minerals, especially if you are sweating a lot.

Dress Appropriately
  • Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing: Wear light-colored clothes that reflect, rather than absorb, the sun's rays.
  • Hats and sunglasses: Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your head and eyes from the sun.

Limit Sun Exposure
  • Stay indoors during peak sun hours: Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM.
  • Seek shade: If you need to be outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible.

Use Sunscreen
  • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen: Use SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from sunburn, which can hinder your body’s ability to cool itself.

Take It Easy
  • Limit strenuous activities: Avoid vigorous exercise or work during the hottest part of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks: Rest in a cool or shaded area to give your body time to cool down.

Keep Cool
  • Use air conditioning: Spend time in air-conditioned buildings when possible.
  • Fans and cool showers: Use fans and take cool showers or baths to lower your body temperature.
  • Cool compresses: Apply cool, wet cloths to your skin, especially the head, neck, and armpits.

Acclimate to the Heat
  • Gradually increase activity: Allow your body to adjust to the heat over several days if you are not used to high temperatures.
  • Build tolerance: Gradually increase the duration and intensity of your outdoor activities.

Know the Signs
  • Recognize symptoms of heat stroke: These include high body temperature (104°F or higher), altered mental state or behavior, nausea, vomiting, flushed skin, rapid breathing, and racing heart rate.
  • Act quickly: If you or someone else shows signs of heat stroke, move to a cooler place, drink water, and seek medical attention immediately.

By following these tips, Texans can help prevent heat stroke and stay safe during this period of extreme heat.

TAMACC Calls on President Biden to Extend Work Permits to Help Alleviate Labor Shortage

The Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) is urging President Biden to address the severe labor shortage by extending work permits to long-term immigrants. This includes undocumented spouses and immediate family members of U.S. citizens, “Dreamers” ineligible for DACA, and other long-term workers who have significantly contributed to the U.S. economy.

Labor Shortage Crisis
Texas is facing a critical labor shortage, with over 749,000 non-farm job openings as of February 2024. The state has only 80 available workers for every 100 open jobs. Nationally, there are 8.7 million job openings but only 6.4 million unemployed workers, leaving nearly 2.4 million positions unfilled even if all unemployed individuals were hired.

Immediate Action Needed
While bipartisan legislation is ideal, the urgency of the situation calls for immediate executive action. TAMACC urges President Biden to use his authority to issue work permits to long-term immigrants who have paid taxes and contributed to the economy for years. These individuals have raised families, many of whom include U.S. citizen children.

Economic and Moral Imperatives
Extending work permits would generate $16 billion in economic activity and benefit 10.6 million U.S. citizens living with undocumented immigrants. It would also protect immigrants from exploitation and enable them to seek jobs matching their skills.

Conclusion
TAMACC calls on President Biden to use his statutory authority to extend work permits to long-term immigrants. This action is both an economic necessity and a moral obligation, crucial for addressing the labor shortages in Texas and nationwide.

It is not too late for YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Congress has until June 7, 2024, to expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) legislation and give reparations to harmed families in New Mexico. RECA would add the Downwinders of New Mexico and the post-1971 uranium miners/workers to the fund for the first time along with other states/territories including Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Guam, Arizona, and Utah.

Cancer does not play politics. This bill has bipartisan sponsorship by Senators Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and Josh Hawley (R-MO). RECA will deliver justice to people who have waited as long as 78 years.

We must push the House leadership to act swiftly and pass the bill that extends and expands the life-saving programs the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) provides.

Please contact:
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson at 202-225-4000
Majority Leader Steve Scalese at 202 225-3015
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries at 202-225-5936

Urge these leaders to support the passage of RECA Amendment S.3853.

Tell them: An extension will not do. We have waited long enough, and many people have died since the last extension was granted two years ago. An extension is not a solution, especially not for those people who are sick and dying now.
